The holiday is celebrated every July 1st. It marks when the British North America Act came into effect in 1867, bringing several colonies together into what we now know as Canada – a significant event referred to as Confederation. Originally called Dominion Day, it officially became known as Canada Day in 1982.

This special day usually features festivals, concerts, fireworks displays, and lots of national pride with red and white colors everywhere.

This year in Kingston, city officials have announced a full day of free activities for both residents and visitors downtown alongside some service changes.

Free celebrations planned downtown

The city is organizing a free event at Confederation Park and Springer Market Square running from noon until 10 p. m., featuring live music, cultural programs, food vendors along with a special area for kids.

The aim of this daylong celebration is to unite residents and visitors through various activities at Kingston’s waterfront downtown area-one of its main gathering spots.

The Market Wing Cultural Space at City Hall will also be available for visitors between noon and six p. m., showcasing a free exhibition titled Music from Miles Around sponsored by Empire Life.

As evening falls attention will shift back over to Springer Market Square where there’ll be a free concert starting at seven p. m.; local DJ Deena will kick things off before headliner Soul Sublime takes over.

To wrap things up fireworks are set for ten p. m., illuminating Lake Ontario’s waterfront at Confederation Park!
