Queen’s University Expands Enrollment with New Funding

Programs in STEM, education, and health have all seen an increase in available spots to help connect more students with well-paying jobs in demand.This announcement is part of a larger investment of $1.7 billion aimed at adding over 70,000 seats in high-demand fields at publicly funded colleges and universities across Ontario. The goal is to strengthen the economy by developing a skilled workforce, as stated in a press release from the Ministry of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2026.“Our province’s greatest strength is our highly skilled workforce - and those workers are trained at our world-class colleges and universities,” said Nolan Quinn, Minister of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security.“This investment is supporting the largest seat expansion in Ontario in more than a decade and will ensure more students have the opportunity to train for good-paying careers that protect and strengthen our communities, industries and province.”The government’s total investment of $6.4 billion in post-secondary education reportedly includes the $1.7 billion for these additional seats. This initiative aims to help Ontario withstand tariffs and economic uncertainty while building a skilled workforce according to what the ministry shared.In May 2026, 30,000 seats were allocated initially while proposals were called for the remaining 40,000 seats. Colleges and universities submitted their “Priority Growth Plan” detailing strengths within their schools along with student demand and local economic trends. They collaborated with nearby communities and industries to pinpoint programs that would ready students for jobs that are currently needed in their regions. Queen’s submission included numerous letters of support from local employers as noted by Andrew Carroll, Media Relations Officer at Queen’s University.According to Bianca Giacoboni, Press Secretary for the ministry via email to Kingstonist, there were 40 evaluators who reviewed each plan under a framework established by the ministry to ensure fair distribution of seats.The newly funded 3,604 seats at Queen’s University consist of:2,496 seats for STEM programs 836 seats for education programs 272 seats for health programs“Queen’s welcomes this significant investment to expand access to postsecondary education and prepare more students for rewarding careers in areas critical to Ontario’s future,” said Patrick Deane, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Queen’s University.“At Queen’s we are committed to developing highly skilled talent that our province needs so graduates can make meaningful contributions to their communities while advancing innovation essential for Ontario's long-term prosperity.”Carroll mentioned that funding has been allocated based on provincial guidelines towards various programs including Bachelor of Applied Science (engineering), Bachelor of Health Sciences, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Education.Programs related to STEM fields healthcare trades or education typically produce graduates who enjoy higher employment rates within relevant sectors along with better wages which helps boost key areas of the economy according to provincial data.“The funding covers both 2,116 existing seats previously unfunded under Ontario's enrollment-based funding model as well as an additional 1,488 undergraduate places set to be phased in over several years until completion by end-2027-28.” These extra spots will be incorporated into future enrollment strategies,” Carroll explained.Seats at Queen's will be open for student enrollment starting as soon as fall semester 2026.For further details check out the Ministry of Colleges , Universities , Research Excellence , and Security website.[ad_2]Source link
