On May 21, the New York Islanders, along with Oak View Group, American Hockey League (AHL) President Scott Howson, and Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwarth, proudly introduced the Hamilton Hammers to an enthusiastic audience at TD Coliseum.

The Hammers are the third AHL team to call this revamped venue home, continuing a legacy that began in the mid-90s.

To celebrate this significant moment in professional hockey for Hamilton, let’s take a look back at AHL hockey’s history in the city.

Hamilton Canucks

The Canucks were Hamilton’s first AHL franchise. They were affiliated with the Vancouver Canucks and played from 1992 to 1994.

Originally owned by ex-NHL players Pat Hickey and Rick Vaive, along with CFL star Bernie Faloney and Dietrick Beer, the team had a mixed record during its two years.

In their debut season, they drew an average attendance of 4,773 fans per game-making it one of the top teams for attendance in the league. However, despite having standout players like Stephane Morin (31 goals and 85 points) and Bob Mason (20 wins), they finished last in their division with a record of 29-45-6-just four points behind the Baltimore Skipjacks.

The roster also included promising talents like Jiri Slegr, Michael Peca, Tim Taylor, Garry Valk, and veteran Rick Vaive who was known for scoring over 50 goals during his time with Toronto.

After that season ended, things got messy off the ice. Faloney and Beer exited after selling to a group called “Double Hitch Enterprises.” While Hickey stayed on as Owner and President initially, he was let go at the start of the 1993-94 season. To add to that chaos, Double Hitch Enterprises went out of business leaving control back to their NHL parent club.

Despite all this turmoil off-the-ice issues led to much better performance on-the-ice. The following year saw Morin leading with an impressive 109 points alongside Jay Mazur (40 goals) and emerging goalie Mike Fountain (34-28-6 record). The Canucks managed second place in their division with a final record of 36-37-7 but fell short against Cornwall Aces in Division Semifinals.

Once that season wrapped up, however, it was announced that the AHL Canucks would relocate to Syracuse for 1994-95 marking an end to their era in Hamilton.

Hamilton Bulldogs

Two seasons after losing their primary farm team from Hamilton due to relocation; Edmonton Oilers moved their AHL affiliate from Cape Breton into Hamilton in May 1996.

That summer saw a public contest held by AHL officials for naming purposes where “Bulldogs” ultimately won out over “Havoc.”

During their first season (1996-97), they ended up third in Canadian Division but put together an impressive playoff run; overcoming St. John Flames then St. John’s Maple Leafs which allowed them capture division title before facing Albany River Rats advancing further until losing five games later against Hershey Bears during Calder Cup Finals. Future NHL stars Greg de Vries and Georges Laraque played key roles on this squad.

As Edmonton’s main affiliate throughout these years; while Bulldogs were competitive on ice-their off-the-rink situation wasn’t quite so stable either culminating around year2000 when rumors circulated regarding possible relocation plans heading towards Houston prompting action via “Stay Dogs Stay!” campaign ensuring retention here within community limits!

Next season brought another crisis related potential shifts toward Toronto once more leading renewed “Stay Dogs Stay” efforts convincing Montreal Canadiens instead relocate Quebec Citadelles rightfully joining forces securing major investment backing from local businessmen including Michael Andlauer who gained full ownership stake come2004 onward!

Under joint affiliation agreements established between Oilers & Canadiens’ franchises lasting through just one singular year alongside coaching talents Claude Julien & Geoff Ward guiding squads’ path-it ultimately led Bulldogs reaching unprecedented highs achieving best overall records realized then showcasing phenomenal successes culminating winning regular-season status concluding achievements prevailing playoff rounds defeating Syracuse-Manitoba-Binghamton all while striving hard competing valiantly through seven-game series versus Houston Aeros falling just short though!
