GUELPH – Police in Guelph are forming a “homecoming working group” to address large unsanctioned gatherings after a wild party at the University of Guelph gained attention last week.

Authorities say the working group is being established in collaboration with the city, the University of Guelph, and Guelph General Hospital to enhance community safety and find ways to hold those responsible accountable.

The police force noted that they, along with the hospital and city services, conduct thorough planning each year leading up to homecoming, but “this year demonstrated that the environment surrounding unsanctioned gatherings has changed.”

Footage from an off-campus homecoming party on Sept. 26 showed huge crowds of young people in the streets, some throwing bottles and other objects as officers attempted to manage the scene.

Guelph police indicated that this gathering was “significantly larger” than similar events in past years, with officers facing issues like people climbing buildings, as well as shoplifting and vandalism at nearby stores.

University of Guelph president Rene Van Acker mentioned last week that the party endangered both students and neighbors, prompting a review by the university regarding the incident.

Police have stated that social media and “individuals who encourage disorder” have significantly contributed to increasing both the size and risks associated with unsanctioned gatherings.

The working group will meet regularly to discuss recommendations for preventing and responding to these types of gatherings.

Last week, authorities sought assistance from the public in identifying individuals featured in social media videos from the Sept. 26 party.

The police confirmed that several individuals faced criminal and provincial charges during that weekend.

This report by The Canadian Press was first Oct. 8, 2026.
