A Halton police officer has been charged following a crash involving a stolen Hummer that collided with a tractor-trailer in Mississauga last year, according to Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit.
Sgt. David Joseph faces charges for dangerous operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm related to the incident from March 12, 2025, as stated in a news release from the SIU on Wednesday.
The chase began in Oakville and concluded in Mississauga, according to the SIU. They reported that Halton police were looking into the theft of a Kia Sedona from an Oakville residence, which also involved a stolen GMC Hummer when both drivers attempted to escape.
The pursuit, allegedly led by Joseph, ended when the driver of the Hummer crashed into the tractor-trailer at Winston Churchill Boulevard and Lakeshore Road E.
The 26-year-old behind the wheel of the Hummer sustained serious injuries, was arrested, and taken to hospital for treatment, as noted by the SIU.
SIU Director Joseph Martino mentioned in the release that he had “reasonable grounds” to believe that the officer committed a criminal offence.
Joseph is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Milton on Nov. 23.
“As the matter is before the courts, and in consideration of the fair trial interests of the accused, the SIU will not provide further comment on the investigation,” said the SIU.
The SIU is an independent civilian agency responsible for investigating incidents involving police in Ontario that lead to death or serious injury, firearm discharges at individuals or allegations of sexual assault.
