With America’s midterm elections approaching, voter dissatisfaction over increasing living costs is a pressing concern. It’s certainly not the best time to engage in a harmful trade conflict with Canada, noted Rex Huppke in USA Today.

However, after contentious trade negotiations fell apart between the two countries, Donald Trump recently imposed 50% tariffs on various Canadian products such as down jackets, wine, dairy items, and hockey sticks. He also hinted at raising tariffs on cars and parts by posting on social media: “WE DON’T NEED CANADA, THEY NEED US!” Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney accused US negotiators of essentially waging war against his country by introducing unacceptable last-minute demands and vowed to respond with equal counter-tariffs beginning on September 8.

Economic consequences

Carney is serious about this stance, said Zeeshan Aleem on MS Now. While Canada depends heavily on exports to the US more than vice versa-making its economy more vulnerable to any trade conflict-Carney has committed himself to standing up to Trump. He believes Canadians might endure economic hardship from a trade war they would attribute to Trump “more easily than Americans would handle rising prices”.

Current polls reflect this sentiment, said Andrew Day in The American Conservative. Only one-third of Canadians view the US favorably now compared to 54% in 2024; 76% support Carney’s position. For someone skilled at fostering nationalism domestically, Trump seems oddly unaware of how stirring similar feelings abroad can backfire.

‘Personal obsession’

He can’t resist it, said Zack Beauchamp on Vox. After all his “jokes” about making Canada the 51st state, Trump has now ordered that Lake Ontario be renamed “Lake America” just to irritate Canadians. Although there have always been disputes between the US and Canada regarding matters like dairy and lumber, these conflicts have never escalated into a full-blown trade war because they’re simply too small relative to GDP.

There doesn’t seem to be any political or business motives pushing Trump into this fight with Canada. His urge to dominate America’s northern neighbor appears to be merely a “personal obsession”-one so crucial for him that he seems willing to pursue it even if it risks undermining his party’s Senate majority.
