Boris Pistorius doesn’t seem like someone who easily gets worked up.
Germany’s defence minister is straightforward and clear, but also careful with his words and intentions.
When he discusses Russia, the future of the West, and the risk of another war in Europe, however, his message is quite alarming: “Our experts say it can happen in 2029.”
Wait. What? That’s just three years away.
In today’s world of exaggerated headlines and viral memes on social media, it’s easy to brush off such warnings or even miss them entirely.
What stood out (at least to me) was that this came from one of Europe’s top politicians.
This statement was made by Pistorius during an extensive interview with while he was in Canada at the end of May.
But then this week, more troubling news emerged.

For 75 years, NATO’s main security assurance has been the U. S. – but that might be changing. In a special interview with , German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius emphasizes that the alliance must gear up to defend itself without America and cautions that a challenge from Russia could arise by decade’s end.
In comments released Wednesday, Generalleutnant Christian Freuding, head of the German Army, indicated that the 2029 timeline isn’t just a random estimate from his government’s national security officials but represents a shared viewpoint among Western allies.
“We have to be ready to fight,” Freuding was quoted as saying by Deutsche Welle. “It’s intelligence; it’s NATO coordinated. All 32 NATO partners agree that Russia could have the capability to invade a NATO partner country in 2029.”
If both Pistorius and Freuding’s serious evaluations weren’t concerning enough, an investigative report from Danish public broadcaster DR revealed this week that military intelligence agencies in several Nordic nations are tracking Russia’s active build-up of defense infrastructure and equipment along its northwestern borders.
Their findings suggest Moscow may be prepared to deploy as many as 115,000 troops directly along NATO’s northern and Baltic borders to enhance its bases for potential conflict in the Baltic Sea.
And what’s the timeline for such preparations? One to three years.
In his interview with , Pistorius noted that until Russia fully invaded Ukraine in 2022, Germany had chosen to ignore or downplay these signs.

“For over 25 years, we all lived under the impression there was no threat. We didn’t need to do anything for our own defense,” said Pistorius while reflecting on the post-Cold War period.
Even after Russia annexed Crimea, Germany seemed unfazed.
“But northern European countries reacted right away; they revived conscription and began rearming their forces,” he stated. “Germany and others did not respond similarly. They heard the alarm clock but hit snooze instead.”
Now they’re awake.

He addressed attendees at Transatlantic Defense Industry Access Forum held at NATO Headquarters in Brussels.
Rutte mentioned “cash is crucial,” yet stressed next month’s summit in Turkey needs tangible plans for combat-ready capabilities.
Unlike some predecessors, Pistorius has openly supported transforming Bundeswehr(German Armed Forces) into forces “fit for war.”
One might wonder if given Russia’s heavy losses in Ukraine, it still has sufficient strength or resources to pose serious threats within three years.
However, Russia is currently undergoing its own massive rearmament initiative with $1 trillion US earmarked for spending through 2036.
