David Eby, the NDP Leader in British Columbia, announced that if his party gets re-elected, they will create a new tax bracket for individuals making $1 million or more to help fund health care.
Eby made this statement on Sunday while campaigning in Comox on Vancouver Island, following his tour of various ridings in southern British Columbia ahead of the election on October 24.
<p He plans to share more information about the new tax bracket during a campaign event in Victoria.
Eby expressed that while his party celebrates those who have achieved financial success, it’s also fair to ask “people who earn a little bit more to pitch-in in a moment like this,” especially when strong public services are necessary.
This announcement follows Eby’s earlier commitment to implement price controls on certain groceries, as well as gasoline and diesel, along with a temporary reduction of 10 cents per litre on the provincial motor fuel tax.
Earlier in the campaign, Eby mentioned plans for a new tax targeting empty condominiums and lifting the speculation and vacancy tax.
