Multiple sources – from both Canada and the U. S. – have been briefed directly about the negotiations and were allowed confidentiality to discuss the talks openly.
The intensity of negotiations is increasing, with Radio-Canada reporting that Canada’s Trade Minister Dominic Le Blanc is set to meet again on Sunday with U. S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. This will be their third meeting within a week.
In recent weeks, Ottawa’s goal has been to negotiate a “comprehensive agreement” with Washington.
Ottawa hopes the Trump administration will backtrack on the new 50 per cent tariffs, scheduled to start Wednesday, affecting nearly $28 billion worth of Canadian goods, which represents about five per cent of Canada’s exports to the U. S.
A key part of this deal would involve an agreement for the Trump administration to lower existing sectoral tariffs that have been impacting industries like steel, aluminum, auto, and lumber. Currently, steel and aluminum face 50 per cent tariffs while autos face 25 per cent tariffs.
