INDYCAR Drivers Finally Get On Track For Practice At Markham After Delays

MARKHAM, Ontario – The INDYCAR series’ debut in the Toronto suburb of Markham faced delays as construction crews required extra time to finish the track ahead of Sunday’s Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham (noon ET on FOX and FOX One).

The support series was set to take to the 2.19-mile course at 9 a. m. ET Friday, with INDYCAR drivers scheduled for their first laps on the 12-turn layout at 3 p. m.

Unfortunately, neither of those times were met, and after multiple delays, INDYCAR decided to cancel all activities for the day at 5:30 p. m.

“Ensuring driver safety and completing the certification process for competing on a brand-new racetrack caused today’s delays,” said a statement from the track.

With preparations still underway in Markham, teams rushed to get everything ready for Saturday.

To make up for lost time, INDYCAR added a practice session on Saturday at 10 a. m., followed by another practice session at 2:30 p. m., which was originally meant for qualifying, and qualifying will now take place at 6:30 p. m.

“INDYCAR is extremely disappointed that our promoter couldn’t complete the track build on schedule despite ample assistance from our team onsite,” said INDYCAR President J. Douglas Boles in a statement.

“Ontario has always been an amazing market for our sport and today’s turnout is proof of that. New events often come with logistical challenges, and we share in our fans’ frustration while apologizing.”

Drivers were eager to get out on track Friday but understood it would be tight.

“I wouldn’t say I’m nervous or anything like that,” Team Penske driver Scott Mc Laughlin shared with reporters Friday morning. “I’m excited. It looks like an awesome layout.”

“Once it’s done, it’s going to be wicked.”

It became clear when teams arrived Thursday that there could be issues; significant amounts of wall barriers and fencing were still incomplete along with not enough staff or equipment available to ensure everything was inspected by the FIA representative.

The planned track walk was pushed back until Friday morning. Despite notable progress overnight, ongoing safety concerns regarding some walls and tire barriers persisted. Additional tire bundles were needed in certain runoff areas and other spots; however, installation was planned for overnight so everything would be ready by Saturday...”>“““.” That’s exactly what happened as planned, leading to track activity starting promptly at 8 a. m., featuring NASCAR Canada Series drivers taking their turns on track.<p Class = "FF-H FS -61L L H -L B"- "A C E = FALSE =" Data – V – O A C W A R T N F H E R P T U W E O H C D Y X R Q Y Z Q " G L F M N I. ///*]]>END OF GOOGLE ANALYTICS CODE */ The first practice session took place without any major issues. However, drivers expressed concern about tire grip levels which is somewhat unexpected given how recently the surface had been repaved.

But overall they felt good about the course.

Tire barrier bundles line up along the Markham course as INDYCAR prepares for Sunday’s race.

AZZ LIGHTS PEPSI [032468657529]“We’re noticing something different than what we expected around hairpin corner,” which instead featured just tight turns around walls rather than curved ones with tire bundles surrounding them.” Marcus Armstrong from Meyer Shank Racing mentioned during Saturday’s post-practice news conference. “It’s definitely going to create some interesting moments during Lap 1 especially since everyone will likely try different lines,” he explained. Returning back to the day’s delay… Drivers were really eager to hit the circuit on Friday because all streets have been resurfaced with only one kind of asphalt throughout. Typically street courses feature various asphalt types due largely due timing differences during previous repaving efforts. “It’s frustrating that we made it all this way only for things not being ready,” said Alex Palou who currently leads in points during his interview early Friday morning. “But let me tell you – so far everything seems incredible! The new pavement feels awesome compared to anything else we’ve seen before.”Alex Palou pointed out how disappointing it was that they couldn’t practice on Friday due its incompletion. “But they need complete this project soon because once finished it’ll be fantastic!” he remarked excitedly. He emphasized there are overtaking opportunities along stretches making parts wide while other sections narrow dramatically. This marks an exciting chapter racing here after hosting races previously held over four decades within downtown Toronto near Exhibition Place! That venue posed several hurdles lately including construction blocking access followed subsequently leading into unavailability this summer owing World Cup matches scheduled earlier down year too… Last summer , promoter Green Savoree brokered five-year agreement partnering City marking relocation roughly twenty-five minutes away providing fresh start hopefully benefiting both communities involved!

“It is what it is,” Will Power summarized regarding ongoing setbacks happening across town!

Track setup troubles aren’t unheard-of particularly facing off against newly constructed street layouts although certainly cast shadow upon city debut experience. “I suppose they’re running behind schedule right now but sometimes that’s part becomes reality!” Andretti Global competitor Will Power told reporters gathered nearby smiling wryly while adding:” It remains lovely indeed!”
