The Burlington city council is preparing to review plans for a significant mixed-use project at 1200 King Rd. This proposal includes an event center operated by Oak View Group, which manages the TD Coliseum, as well as community recreation spaces, retail options, and over 8,800 housing units.

As per Alinea Land Corporation, the council will be asked on Monday to kick off necessary due diligence to move forward with planning, partnerships, and execution of this development close to the Aldershot GO station.

The envisioned 121-acre project aims to create a transit-oriented urban village that combines residential areas with commercial, retail, educational, institutional, and hospitality uses while also incorporating parks and natural heritage sites.

A key feature of the proposal is a planned district for events and recreation that may include an arena, aquatic facilities, spaces for community programs, and an event plaza. Alinea believes this facility could stimulate housing development and boost investment and economic activities throughout the area.

The company states it has partnered with Oak View Group and is looking into collaborations with the Ontario Hockey League. Canada Basketball has also shown interest in supporting the arena concept along with potential hosting opportunities. The YMCA of Hamilton, Burlington and Brantford has expressed interest in community programming as well.

The comprehensive development plan features 26 blocks that will be developed in phases. Alinea indicates that this initiative could help meet housing needs while offering recreational, cultural, and community amenities in west Burlington.

Additionally, it suggests enhancing regional connections between Aldershot GO station and Hamilton’s West Harbour GO area to link this new development with Hamilton’s downtown entertainment district.

If approved by the council for further action, the next steps would focus on due diligence efforts along with partnership agreements, operating models, and funding possibilities related to both the proposed event center and its surrounding developments.
