Drivers planning to visit Niagara Falls and other popular spots this weekend should be ready for delays due to another set of lane closures on the QEW Burlington Bay Skyway, which is busy during this summer travel season.

According to the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, two through lanes will be available on the bridge heading toward Niagara starting tonight (July 10) at 10 p. m. These restrictions will last until Monday at 5 a. m. as workers continue with a major renovation project that began in the spring of 2024.

One of the four lanes on the bridge will be closed all weekend long, and lane widths will also be narrower in the construction area. One lane leading to the Skyway via the Eastport Drive collector ramp will stay open. However, this collector ramp will close overnight from Friday to Saturday and again from Sunday to Monday for barrier relocation work.

All ramps at the Northshore Boulevard interchange will remain accessible, and Eastport Drive is an alternative route for drivers wanting to get back onto the Niagara-bound QEW.

These latest closures are part of a long-term initiative aimed at rehabilitating the 2.2-kilometre Niagara-bound Burlington Bay Skyway bridge and improving highway lighting along both directions of the QEW between Northshore Boulevard and south of the bridge.

Construction kicked off in May 2024 and is projected to carry on until December 2026, so drivers can expect ongoing lane reductions and traffic delays in the months ahead.

Additional overnight lane closures are planned for early next week. From Monday night into Tuesday morning and again from Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, three out of four lanes bound for Niagara on the bridge will close from 10 p. m. to 6 a. m.

The Ministry of Transportation reminds everyone that construction schedules depend on weather conditions and may change.

With heavy traffic anticipated on routes leading to Niagara Falls, wineries, and other tourist attractions this weekend, officials suggest travelers consider using GO Transit as an option to avoid congestion caused by construction.
