Opposing a bill that aimed to provide Ontario residents with a tax break on food has drawn the attention of protesters to Brampton’s Conservative Members of Provincial Parliament.
This Saturday, many demonstrators are expected to gather at Brampton City Hall for another protest as part of an ongoing campaign against Premier Doug Ford and the Ontario PC Party.
The event this week will focus on how all of Brampton’s MPPs voted against Bill 113 – legislation proposed by the NDP and backed by the Liberals and Greens that would have reduced a portion of the harmonized sales tax on certain food items and non-alcoholic drinks.
Brampton-Centre MPP Charmaine Williams, Brampton-West MPP Amarjot Sandhu, Brampton-North MPP Graham Mc Gregor, and Brampton-East MPP Hardeep Singh Grewal all voted “nay” along with the entire PC caucus – an action described as “shameful” by NDP leader Marit Stiles.
Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy mentioned that the government has already taken steps to make life more affordable in Ontario, including cutting personal income tax for lower income brackets.
Brampton’s MPPs aren’t the only ones being called out by the “Fight Ford” activists; around 60 demonstrations are planned across Ontario this Saturday.
Protesters also staged rallies in Brampton during March and April. Their concerns include eliminating rent control for new unit developments since 2018, recent changes to OSAP which increase reliance on loans rather than grants, a province-wide ban on automated speed enforcement cameras, and healthcare under-funding.
Additional issues raised include the redevelopment of Ontario Place, the Greenbelt scandal, and plans for amalgamating Niagara Region.
The protest is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p. m. outside of Brampton City Hall.
