A man from Brampton is facing several charges after police reported that he stole gas from a station in Dufferin County, hit an attendant with his vehicle while fleeing, and then led officers on a chase into a wooded area.
According to the Ontario Provincial Police, this series of events unfolded on May 13 at around 2:44 p. m. at a Pioneer gas station located in the Village of Mansfield, about 60 km north of Brampton.
Authorities say that a man driving a black Ford SUV towing a camper tried to leave the station without paying for fuel. As he was stealing the gas, the attendant attempted to stop him but was struck by the vehicle as the suspect sped away.
The attendant sustained serious injuries and had to be airlifted to a trauma center in Toronto for treatment. Police report that he remains hospitalized but is in stable condition.
Officers later discovered that the SUV was using stolen license plate number 233 DST, while the camper trailer it was towing had stolen plate number 521 DTB.
Authorities mentioned that the suspect managed to avoid capture until the next day when members of OPP’s Nipigon detachment found both the vehicle and trailer linked to this incident.
According to investigators, officers set up a spike belt in an effort to stop the vehicle; however, the suspect fled once more before heading into nearby woods.
After what police described as an extensive search operation, they were able to locate and arrest the suspect.
The arrested individual has been identified as 53-year-old Darbara Singh Mann from Brampton.
He faces multiple charges including two counts of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, theft, dangerous operation causing bodily harm, and failing to stop at an accident resulting in bodily harm.
Investigators are reaching out for help from anyone who witnessed this event or may have seen the suspect’s vehicle or has dash camera or surveillance footage. They can contact Dufferin OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
