Authorities in Mississauga and Brampton have stepped up patrols around Jewish places of worship and cultural centers in Peel following a shooting incident that occurred in Belleville on Sunday night.
Gunfire was reported shortly after 7 p. m. when a Belleville Police officer encountered an individual near Bleecker Avenue and Victoria Avenue, which is primarily a residential part of the city situated about 180 kilometers east of Toronto.
The event reportedly took place close to the Sons of Jacob Synagogue during a gathering for Yom Kippur.
The province’s Special Investigations Unit has been informed, and Belleville police are not providing additional comments at this moment. The SIU is activated whenever serious injuries occur due to interactions between law enforcement and civilians.
Peel Regional Police acknowledged the shooting outside a synagogue in Belleville on their online platform Monday morning, stating “we recognize the fear brought on by this violence against our Jewish community.”
They also mentioned that during the High Holidays season, including Yom Kippur today, they’ve increased patrols around places of worship and cultural centers in Mississauga and Brampton.
“These efforts are continuing as officers work to provide reassurance and support community safety,” said Peel police in their statement, adding “our thoughts are with the injured Belleville Police Service officer, as well as their loved ones and colleagues.”
Meanwhile, Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressed his feelings on X, saying he was “disgusted by the shooting” and stands with the Jewish community in Belleville and across Ontario.
