Officials from Peel Region took the opportunity at this week’s Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) conference to urge the provincial government for additional support in areas like infrastructure, housing, healthcare, and essential services as Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon continue to expand.

Regional Chair Nando Iannicca, along with members of regional council and senior staff, met with provincial ministers, parliamentary assistants, and ministry officials during the conference to outline the region’s priorities and seek commitments from the province.

The concerns presented by Peel span a variety of services impacting residents throughout Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon. These include housing needs, infrastructure demands, healthcare access, and social services.

A primary focus for the region was obtaining long-term funding for infrastructure to keep up with growth while addressing challenges linked to development charges.

In discussions with the Ministry of Infrastructure, Peel officials highlighted the necessity for provincial funding to support projects related to growth and provide essential infrastructure for new housing developments and economic initiatives.

Both the province and Peel agreed to collaborate further in ensuring that housing-related infrastructure is adequately prepared to accommodate anticipated growth in the region.

Housing issues were also a significant part of Peel’s talks with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing.

Officials discussed topics such as housing affordability, homelessness challenges, and ways to boost affordable housing supply while exploring how to strengthen collaboration between municipal and provincial levels.

Peel was acknowledged by the province as a key regional ally in efforts aimed at enhancing housing affordability through reductions in development charges.

Development charges are fees collected from developers intended to assist municipalities in covering costs associated with infrastructure and services necessary for new growth. Alterations to these charges can influence building expenses related to new housing projects.

Healthcare was another crucial topic on their agenda. Peel officials conferred with representatives from the Ministry of Health about funding options for seniors living at home as well as partnerships with community organizations.

The province alongside Peel reiterated their commitment towards community-based health initiatives designed to assist seniors in staying at home longer while reducing avoidable hospital visits and early transitions into long-term care facilities.

Peel also addressed supportive housing needs for victims and survivors facing family or intimate partner violence during discussions with the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services.

There was an agreement between both parties to maintain collaboration on solutions tackling gender-based violence as well as intimate partner violence issues.

While many residents might not see it directly, Peel Region plays a vital role behind-the-scenes. The matters discussed at AMO pertain significantly to services offered across Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon.

The region oversees numerous services including public health programs, initiatives addressing homelessness/housing needs, social service programs, paramedic operations as well as regional infrastructure upkeep.

“The AMO Conference provided an important opportunity to strengthen Peel Region’s relationships with provincial partners and advance the priorities that matter most to our residents and businesses,” Iannicca said.

“Our discussions focused on infrastructure, housing, health care and long-term sustainability for one of Canada’s fastest-growing regions.”

Iannicca expressed appreciation toward Ontario’s engagement while reaffirming their commitment to work alongside the government on critical priorities affecting the region.
