The race for mayor in Railroad City is heating up, with three candidates aiming to succeed Mayor Joe Preston as he steps down.
Preston has been in the mayor’s office since 2018, securing two terms after previously serving as a Conservative MP for Elgin-Middlesex-London from 2004 to 2015.
Earlier this year, he announced that he won’t run for re-election.
The new mayor will take charge as St. Thomas continues its growth, with several significant industrial projects expected to create new jobs and attract investments to the area.
The city has been selected as the location for the large Power Co battery plant, a branch of Volkswagen that has already hired nearly 400 workers while construction is ongoing. Norway’s Vianode has also confirmed plans to build a battery materials facility in St. Thomas.
Aidan Frederick, Corey Janzen, and current city councillor and former mayor Jeff Kohler are all contending for the position.

At just 27 years old, Aidan Frederick stands out as the youngest candidate in this year’s mayoral race.
A native of St. Thomas, he studied software engineering at Western University before transitioning into technology and then accounting roles.
Frederick believes his experience working on municipal audits gives him insight into local finances and operations.
He’s running because he’s excited about what lies ahead for St. Thomas.
“We’re at this turning point almost with the growth of our city,” he said. “I think we need some new faces in City Hall, some new ideas.”
His main priorities over the next four years include increasing housing availability and enhancing transportation options.
Regarding transportation, Frederick emphasizes that it’s important to look at how people move around within St. Thomas and travel to nearby communities.
He also sees his youth as an advantage in this campaign.
“I think being a younger person running for this position is helping the younger folks realize that our problems matter,” he said. “The things we’re facing do matter and that we can make a change.”

Kohler grew up in St. Thomas starting at age five and is well-known at City Hall.
He held the mayoral position from 2003 to 2006 and is currently serving as a city councillor.
Kohler states he’s running because he can provide what he calls “capable, local, proven leadership.”
“The conditions have been set in St. Thomas and the future is looking bright regardless of national and provincial trends,” he said. “And effective leadership and capacity is what St. Thomas needs and what the residents are looking for.”
Kohler argues that fiscal responsibility will be crucial over the next four years; it’s important for spending to be wise while staying within municipal guidelines.
Kohler points out his experience with local politics along with his involvement in decisions that helped shape today’s city along with established relationships with city staff.
“The city’s strategic plans would continue under my leadership instead of just going on a shelf to gather dust,” he added.
This includes efforts aimed at eliminating homelessness by 2027.
“We’re one of only a few municipalities that’s actually managed to reduce it.. we’re proud of that effort, hoping we’ll reach our goal moving forward.”
