On Friday, March 20, officers were dispatched to Chinguacousy Park after receiving reports of the memorial being defaced. Upon their arrival, they confirmed the act of vandalism and quickly assigned the case to the Hate Crime Unit.

After a detailed investigation, a 14-year-old boy from Brampton was taken into custody and charged with two counts of mischief exceeding $5,000 on Tuesday, March 31. The youth will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice at a later date.

Due to provisions in the Youth Criminal Justice Act (Y. C. J. A.), the name of this young person cannot be disclosed; therefore, his identity is protected.

“Peel Regional Police will not tolerate vandalism – especially hate-motivated crimes against spaces that hold significance for our communities. Everyone in our region deserves to feel safe in public areas. We appreciate our Hate Crime Unit for their quick action in finding and holding accountable those responsible,” stated Chief Nishan Duraiappah from Peel Regional Police.

If anyone has information regarding this incident, they are urged to contact investigators within the Hate Crime Unit at 905-453-2121, extension 6098. Anonymous tips can also be submitted by calling Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or by visiting www. peelcrimestoppers. ca.

Peel Regional Police recently established the Hate Crime Unit – a new centralized unit aimed at improving responses to hate-motivated offenses and culturally sensitive incidents. Hate crimes can be reported by calling 905-453-3311 for non-emergencies, dialing 911 during emergencies, or online at peelpolice. ca/onlinereporting.
