A man from Brampton is facing multiple charges after the Ontario Provincial Police allegedly caught him speeding in a car with stolen licence plates during a traffic stop in northern Ontario.
The 28-year-old was pulled over by officers from the East Algoma detachment on Causley Street in Blind River around 11:45 a. m. on Oct. 9, according to police reports.
Blind River is located on the north shore of Lake Huron, roughly 150 kilometres east of Sault Ste. Marie and about 75 kilometres west of Sudbury.
According to OPP, the officers were conducting traffic enforcement when they noticed a white crossover SUV heading east at a high speed.
An investigation reportedly showed that the driver lacked a valid driver’s licence, insurance, and vehicle permit. The police also found that the vehicle had licence plates reported stolen from White River, which is situated north of Lake Superior.
The driver was arrested and taken to the Blind River OPP detachment for processing.
He faces several charges including stunt driving, driving without a licence, operating an uninsured vehicle, failing to apply for a permit after acquiring ownership of the vehicle, using an unauthorized licence plate on the vehicle, and possession of property obtained by crime valued under $5,000.
The SUV has been impounded for 14 days.
The accused, Rahul Sangwan, is set to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on Dec. 3.
