A four-week jury trial has started in Barrie for Brian Lancaster, who’s facing second-degree murder charges in connection with the death of 25-year-old Kyle Farrows.

The trial is being held before Superior Court Justice Laura Bird, and four weeks have been set aside for court proceedings.

Lancaster, 38, has been detained since his arrest in December 2023.

Farrows, who was 25 at the time of his death, had connections to Midland and Parry Sound but was living in Orillia.

He was discovered fatally stabbed in his apartment on Andrew Street after letting Lancaster and his ex-girlfriend stay over for 12 days leading up to Christmas in 2023, according to the Crown’s opening remarks.

The following day, a woman found Farrows under a blood-soaked pile of blankets and “obviously deceased,” as stated by Crown attorney Shannon Curry during her opening statement to the jury.

A few days later, both Lancaster and his ex-girlfriend, Mackenzie Harrod, were apprehended in an Orillia car dealership parking lot.

The Crown’s opening statement serves as a guide for what they hope will unfold throughout the trial; while it is not evidence itself, it gives insight into what the jury can anticipate over the next few weeks.

Curry also informed the jury that Lancaster misrepresented himself to Farrows as her brother named “Noah,” likely an attempt to ease Farrows’s ongoing romantic feelings towards his ex-girlfriend.

Court proceedings revealed that Lancaster and Harrod had nowhere else to turn when Farrows offered them shelter after a night filled with “socializing and consuming marijuana,” which included another couple.

The reasons behind how things escalated into violence are still being examined. The conflict surrounding Harrod appears to have led to Farrows’s death. The jury must determine if they accept Lancaster’s anticipated claims of self-defense. In cases involving self-defense, juries are often asked to consider manslaughter as a possible verdict.

This case is being prosecuted by Curry along with co-counsel Sonny Dudani.

On the defense side is seasoned criminal attorney Alison Craig, who has handled several homicide cases including one where she successfully claimed self-defense. Brendan Monk and Tamar Bitton are assisting as defense co-counsel.

The week began with dozens of potential jurors summoned to appear at court. The selection process was completed shortly after lunch followed by Bird’s instructions. Evidence presentation began just before court adjourned for the day.

While the jury isn’t sequestered during the trial itself, they will be during their deliberations.
