A witness to last night’s event on Coulter Street reported seeing the vehicle “hit the curb and get airborne, then plunge like an ostrich off a skyscraper.”

An SUV fell into a deep construction site hole in north Barrie last night, causing injuries to the driver.

Emergency teams were alerted to the incident around 7:20 p. m. on Wednesday after an SUV fell into the pit at a residential highrise construction area on Coulter Street behind Bayfield Mall, according to police spokesperson Kim Phillips who spoke with Barrie Today.

The driver, a 27-year-old woman, was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

The construction site seemed properly marked, including a surrounding metal fence, Phillips stated.

The vehicle dropped about 16 feet.

An investigation is still underway.

Barrie resident Rob Johnson was nearby when the accident occurred and observed the SUV “hit the curb and get airborne, then plunge like an ostrich off a skyscraper,” he told Barrie Today.

“I was first on the scene,” he mentioned. “I don’t even really remember how I got down into the hole – I just acted.”

Johnson said he opened the door of the vehicle and “made sure she was alive, and then kept her safe and conscious until EMTs arrived. There wasn’t much to it, honestly. I just did what needed to be done.”

Johnson noted that the woman was alert and responsive when he left after paramedics took over.
