Out of the 240 individuals who lost their lives in all-terrain vehicle accidents examined by OPP from 2016 to 2025, 41 were passengers.
There’s no denying that wearing a helmet while riding an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) can save lives.
This is according to the Ontario Provincial Police, who report that half of the riders killed in crashes they responded to were not wearing one.
“It’s a statistic that has seen little change in more than a decade and one that leaves no doubt about the risks of not protecting your head and your livelihood on the trails,” the OPP stated in a news release.
The police also mention that alcohol and drug use plays a role in nearly half of the fatal collisions they have investigated.
“Sadly, when trail riders engage in these behaviours, it is their loved ones who pay the price,” OPP said. “In some cases, it also costs the lives of innocent passengers.”
Of the 240 people killed in ATV crashes investigated by OPP between 2016 and 2025, 41 of them were passengers.
The OPP encourages parents and guardians to enroll young riders in Ontario’s Youth ATV Rider Training Program.
