A 22-year-old man from Brampton is facing charges after the Ontario Provincial Police found three stolen vehicles during an investigation early in the morning west of Ottawa.
The arrest took place on June 16, when officers from the Lanark County OPP received a tip from a vehicle security monitoring company. This information indicated that two stolen vehicles from the Peel Region were heading eastbound on Highway 7.
Shortly after 2 a. m., officers spotted the two vehicles along with a third one near Carleton Place. The police reported that all three vehicles were being driven without license plates.
Officers managed to stop one of the vehicles and apprehended the driver. However, the other two vehicles did not stop and were later found abandoned in Beckwith Township.
In response, police initiated a search involving an OPP canine unit, members of their Emergency Response Team, and assistance from the Ottawa Police Service. The suspects who escaped from the two abandoned vehicles have not yet been located.
As part of this investigation, Harbalab Shergill, age 22, from Brampton has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.
The accused was held for a bail hearing and was set to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Perth on June 16.
Police have not disclosed any details about who owns the stolen vehicles or if further charges may follow as investigations continue.
