Home to over 200,000 residents, this large city within the Durham Region blends lively new neighborhoods with scenic waterfront areas and older industrial zones. Whether you’re traveling from (arguably one of the least liked airports) Toronto Pearson or central Toronto itself, it’s just under an hour’s drive east on Highway 401. If you prefer public transport and enjoy trains, hop on the GO Train from Union Station straight to Oshawa GO. This ride also takes about an hour; either way you choose is an easy option compared to navigating through Toronto.

Oshawa may have a smaller art scene than Toronto but its cozy size makes it more personal and engaging. The city’s biggest art institution is the Robert Mc Laughlin Gallery which features works by Painters Eleven-an influential group of abstract Canadian artists from the 1950s. Artist Alexandra Luke played a significant role here since Painters Eleven first gathered at her studio near town. Established in 1967 thanks to contributions from Luke and the Mc Laughlin family, this gallery highlights not only Painters Eleven but also showcases modern Canadian art focusing on postwar abstraction.
In addition to this major gallery nearby are various smaller creative spots scattered around downtown featuring independent galleries, studios, and artist-run workshops that feel warm and inviting. A couple of must-visit places include Fresh Prints Gallery (great pun!) which is a compact print-focused venue showcasing local printmakers’ work at affordable prices; also worth checking out is Shop Makers Oshawa Centre-a collective retail shop that highlights pieces by local artisans.
