The fire chief reports that a man in his 50s sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries during an incident in the Shanty Bay area.

A snowmobiler struck a pressure crack on Lake Simcoe this afternoon in Oro-Medonte’s Line 2 area, resulting in significant injuries.

According to Roree Payment, chief of the Oro-Medonte Fire and Emergency Services, the injured man was found about one kilometre off shore near Shanty Bay.

“The patient was located, treated and removed from the ice,” Payment said. “He was transported via Ornge (air ambulance) to a Toronto-area hospital where he is listed in serious but non-life threatening condition.”

Payment noted that fire and emergency services received the call just before 12:30 p. m.

He urged everyone to avoid going onto the ice, particularly over the next few days as temperatures are expected to rise above freezing.

“When it starts to warm, the ice conditions can change rapidly,” he said. “No ice is safe ice.”
