Gerhard Koplin, or Gary as most knew him, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, February 10, 2026.
Gary was born in Berlin, Germany and made the bold choice to leave for Canada at just 18 years old. He held various jobs throughout the country and often heard others rave about Vancouver, British Columbia-“God’s country,” they called it-so beautiful. In November 1955, he took a bus to Vancouver. When he arrived on a sunny day with snow-capped mountains, he realized this was where he wanted to settle down for good.
Just three years after moving to Canada, he achieved his dream of owning a home-a lovely three-story house.
On April 29, 1959, he proudly became a Canadian Citizen. In May of that year, he traveled back to Berlin for an extended visit. There in June, he met Ursula and they tied the knot in December before returning to Canada in January 1960. He worked as a Glazier and installed countless windows, doors, and mirrors across the Lower Mainland. The family relocated to Coquitlam in January 1969. Life continued with holidays, gardening projects, and family gatherings keeping him busy.
Gary was known for his generosity; he shared his love of gardening by donating fresh produce from his garden to the local food bank. Many expressed their gratitude for his kindness.
He is survived by his wife Ursula, son Jim (Kathy), daughter Nancy (Chris), and grandsons Craig (Elliot) and Richard (Emma).
No Celebration of Life or service will be held as per his wishes.
He would want everyone to be kind and give back.
