PICKERING – As President Trump continues to challenge Ontario’s economy, the government is taking steps to secure the province’s energy future by launching construction on the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station refurbishment, Canada’s largest clean energy project. This initiative aims to safeguard Ontario and foster a more self-sufficient economy by extending the operational life of Pickering’s four CANDU reactors by up to 38 years. It will also create around 30,500 jobs each year during construction and another 7,500 jobs across Canada throughout its duration. Following approval from the Ontario government regarding Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG) refurbishment plan, the Pickering B units (Units 5 to 8) will be taken offline by September 2026. Once complete, the updated station will provide up to 2,200 megawatts (MW) of reliable power-enough for about 2.2 million homes. The refurbishment involves replacing 1,520 fuel channels along with 48 boilers and constructing a deep-water intake stretching over 1.5 kilometers. Site construction kicks off today with reactor upgrade work set to start after receiving final approval from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) in January 2027.
Constructed using Canadian technology with a local supply chain in mind, this refurbishment is projected to add $41.6 billion to Canada’s GDP while keeping over 90 percent of spending within Ontario and Canada itself. Aecon Group Inc. and Candu Energy-a company under Atkins Réalis-for executing Pickering’s Unit 5 Retube along with Feeder and Boiler Replacement (RFBR), valued at approximately $1.7 billion.
