March 8, 1966 – May 25, 2026
Kanina Clara Wapenisk, formerly Sturgeon, was born on March 8, 1966 in Sioux Lookout, Ontario. She grew up in Kingfisher Lake First Nation. From a young age, Kanina faced several health challenges. Her mother prepared her siblings for what lay ahead. Throughout her school years, she had a strong circle of friends who supported her and defended her against bullying.
In 1993, Kanina married Josie Wapenisk. She became a proud mother to Karen in 1996 and Philip in 1998. Being a mom was the best part of Kanina’s life. She loved being involved in her children’s activities and creating happy memories with them. Every Halloween, she went Trick Or Treating with her kids and made sure to grab a bag for herself too! Even as her daughter grew up, they continued this tradition together! Kanina always radiated happiness and embraced life to the fullest!
After losing her husband in 2019, she started dating Allie Sakakeep. They enjoyed their time together until she fell ill suddenly. Allie stayed at home to look after their house and her cat named ‘Pizza.’
Kanina took her final breath at 6:15 EST on Monday, May 25, 2026 at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. Beside her were her beloved children, along with a friend and siblings Myles and Mary; who supported her throughout her hospital stay. She expressed that she was waiting for Philip to arrive before saying goodbye. Just 45 minutes after he walked into the room, she passed away.
Kanina ‘Clara’ Wapenisk is survived by her children Karen and Philip; friend Allie Sakakeep; brothers Myles (Martha) Sturgeon, Daniel (Sarahann) Sturgeon, Samuel (Greta) Sturgeon; sisters Betty (Eno) Mc Kay and Mary Kanakakeesic; along with many other family members.
She is preceded in death by husband Josie Wapenisk; father Peter & mother Ina Sturgeon; Zacheus & Sarahjane Sturgeon; brother Josiah; sister Ida Beardy; nephew Douglas Beardy; nephew Kyle Beardy; niece Cyanara Bighead and others.
