This weekend is packed with local happenings as December keeps the excitement going.
Alice in Wonderland will be performed at the Guelph Little Theatre, with both afternoon and evening shows available.
On Sunday, Ian Graham and Friends will bring a night of Christmas music to All Saints Anglican Church in Waterloo. Doors open at 7 p. m. Admission is free, but donations to The Food Bank of Waterloo Region are welcome.
The Shipyard Kitchener Party takes place at Wesley United Church in Cambridge on Saturday at 7:30 p. m., featuring folk music, storytelling, and comedy.
Joy In The City Seven, A Gospel Christmas Celebration happens on Saturday at Parkview Church in Guelph. This event will showcase musicians like R& B artist Jill Zadeh, gospel singer Londa Larmond, saxophonist Jim Duffiled, and gospel songwriter and vocalist Kerroy Williams. Expect stories filled with hope and joy as well.
If you’re up for a movie outing, Looper is screening at Princess Cinemas in Waterloo on Saturday afternoon as part of the Joel Rubinoff Film Festival. There’ll be a discussion with Scott Hamilton from United Way (who is also a city councillor for Cambridge) after the film, with some proceeds benefiting United Way.
This Sunday features two Christmas Bird Counts as well. One takes place in Guelph that includes a special kids count while the other is happening in Cambridge.
Volunteers spend their day counting birds they spot within a 24-kilometre circle. For more details, reach out to the organizers through Ontario Nature’s website. If you can’t make it this weekend, don’t worry-the Kitchener Christmas Bird Count is scheduled for December 20.
The Waterloo County Carollers will perform at The Gaslight District in Cambridge on Friday evening from 6 p. m. to 8 p. m., providing a free concert. Then on Saturday afternoon starting at 1 p. m., How The Grinch Stole Christmas will be shown for free on the outdoor screen at The Gaslight District where you can also meet The Grinch and Cindy Lou Who during their visit.
In hockey news this weekend, the Kitchener Rangers are playing away games.
The Guelph Storm will host the Sarnia Sting Friday night at Sleeman Centre before heading to Sarnia again for another match-up against them Sunday afternoon.
Menorah Lighting

Uptown Waterloo
Join Rohr Chabad Centre for Jewish Life as they light the menorah on Hanukkah’s first night. Enjoy skating on the outdoor rink while volunteers usually have donuts or other treats available as everyone comes together to celebrate lighting that first candle.
If you can’t join Sunday’s event, there are additional lighting ceremonies set for Monday in Cambridge, Thursday in Stratford, and next weekend in Kitchener.
