It’s almost as alarming as a fast-food drive-thru for medical assistance in dying.

Dr. James Mac Lean from London, Ont., has been warned by the College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPSO) after concerns arose about his handling of MAID cases. This includes evaluating a 45-year-old man outside a Tim Hortons in St. Thomas and personally driving him to a location in London where he provided drugs that ended his life-despite objections from his family.

An even more troubling situation involved Mac Lean administering MAID to a cancer patient without one of the required three medications because he couldn’t find it in his bag and his pharmacy order wasn’t ready. After declaring the man dead and leaving his home, Mac Lean had to return when the patient started breathing again. He then gave additional drugs, including the missing neuromuscular-blocking medication, before pronouncing him dead for a second time.

The family’s horror at witnessing such an unprofessional process during what should have been a dignified death is unimaginable.

A report released by CPSO’s Inquiries Committee found two complaints against Mac Lean prompted an investigation by an independent assessor who concluded he “did not meet professional standards” leading to potential harm or injury based on five out of twenty reviewed cases.”

The evaluator indicated that he seemed too eager to approve MAID: “proceeding with assessments without sufficient corroboration,” which undermines secondary assessors’ independence while risking coercion during evaluations for MAID.”

The evaluator also stated he should have waited for proper medications rather than using ones available at hand; additionally mentioning how he engaged patients may be perceived as unprofessional or coercive.”
