With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Mrs. Jo-Anne Bates; a devoted wife, caring sister, and wonderful friend to all who knew her.

She left us on May 18, 2026, Victoria Day, surrounded by her loved ones; Ron Bates and their two dogs Gunner and KC at home after a brave fight against cancer.

Jo-Anne was born on March 20th, 1960, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Ronald and Clara Fredborg. She spent much of her childhood with her maternal grandparents Joe & Anne Gall, where she learned many skills from the wisdom of her family. This time helped her discover her hidden talents in creativity and artistry such as sewing, crafting, and making beautiful artisanal pieces.

After graduating from Selkirk High School, Jo-Anne began working at the Canadian Tire Automotive Service Desk for several years. Over time she took on various roles until she found a long-term position at Western Grocers where she retired after many dedicated years. Additionally, she played a vital role in her husband Ron’s business “Canadian Bat Houses,” managing operations and providing unwavering support.

Jo-Anne was incredibly talented and creative; she excelled in everything she did with an unforgettable touch. She completed countless projects with meticulous attention to detail that were both beautiful and perfectly crafted. Not only did she enjoy completing these projects but also loved sharing them by gifting them to others. We will always treasure the creations Jo-Anne made, and those who received them will hold them close forever.

She had many interests throughout her life but one of the biggest was raising Cocker Spaniels alongside Ron over their lifetime together. She cherished moments spent at their camp on Cushing Lake with Ron and their dogs. Whether it was relaxing by the lake or enjoying fish fries with friends; life won’t be quite the same without her presence.

Jo-Anne is survived by her loving husband of 26 years, Ron; her brother John (Rosie), along with their children Amanda and Curtis. She will also be fondly remembered by her mother-in-law Florence; siblings-in-law Karen (Cliff), Grant (Dorothy), Greg (Beth); as well as Ron’s children Christopher and Sharon along with grandchildren Mackenzie and Madison. Jo-Anne leaves behind many dear nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends too.

She was predeceased by her parents Ronald and Clara as well as grandparents Joe and Anne Gall.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to Dr. Sellick, Dr. Bhat along with the care team at TBRHSC; Michael Uitto and the Harbourview Team; Bayshore staff especially Crystal-thank you for your kindness towards Jo-Anne and Ron during this challenging time while attending to Jo-Anne’s medical needs. A special thanks to Phyllis Danu who will lead a beautiful service celebrating Jo-Anne’s life

Your support meant so much whether you visited in person or reached out via calls or messages during this difficult period-thank you for making such a difference when it mattered most.

If you’d like to honor Jo-Anne’s memory through donations instead of flowers please consider giving to the Humane Society.

She will always be loved deeply missed yet forever held in our hearts.

The service celebrating Jo-Anne’s life will take place at Harbourview Funeral Centre on June 10th, 2026 at 11:00am. We invite everyone to join us in honoring Jo-Anne’s legacy.
