The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has found that Halton police officers are not responsible for the death of a man in Burlington this past June.
On June 3, Halton police received a call about a situation at a home in Burlington where it was suggested that a man had killed someone and was threatening a woman. The SIU identified the voices on the call as belonging to a mother and her son.
When officers arrived, the mother welcomed them into the house and pointed them upstairs, indicating where her son was located.
The officers instructed the man to exit the ensuite bathroom he was hiding in and to drop his knife.

As the man “stumbled out” of the bathroom into the adjacent master bedroom, he encountered an officer’s taser which caused him to fall to the floor.
Police then took him into custody and noticed he was bleeding heavily from a self-inflicted cut across his neck.
They began first-aid efforts until paramedics arrived but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The SIU, acting as an oversight body for police conduct, has concluded that there were no criminal offenses committed by Halton police in connection with this man’s death.
