In 2026, Doors Open Ontario will celebrate its 25th season, marking an important achievement for a program that has transformed from a small heritage initiative into one of the province’s most cherished and accessible cultural experiences.

Sure, Doors Open is fantastic in Toronto, but it doesn’t stop there. That’s just the starting point.

Started in 2002 by the Ontario Heritage Trust, Doors Open kicked off with only 17 events. Over the years, it has expanded to include a vast network of 34 participating communities. This growth highlights not just its popularity but also a desire for connections to places and history.

At its essence, Doors Open Ontario is straightforward: free access to buildings and sites that are typically closed to the public. What attendees gain is something deeper-a behind-the-scenes look at how communities were formed and remembered.

You might walk into a historic bank and find yourself standing in an original vault or visit an industrial site to see some historical infrastructure that once powered entire areas.

It’s wonderful because these are real locations with real stories. And for one weekend, they share their narratives out loud.

The 2026 season kicks off in Stratford this weekend on April 18-19 and concludes in Niagara Falls on October 18, with various stops across the province along the way.

Toronto’s event set for May 23-24 remains one of the biggest gatherings, attracting thousands eager to explore everything from historical landmarks to modern architecture. Ottawa follows in June, along with smaller communities like Tillsonburg, Owen Sound and Haldimand joining in too. It’s a perfect reason for a road trip.

In 2025, more than 460,000 visits were recorded across the program. Over 93 percent of Ontarians live in areas that have hosted a Doors Open event. Since it started, over 1,000 events have taken place.
