Several dead geese discovered at the Whitby waterfront earlier this month have been confirmed to carry avian flu.

The results from testing the birds were verified last week by the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative, and local officials are advising residents to steer clear of geese and keep pets on leashes.

A dog in Alberta passed away in November after chewing on an infected dead goose – marking the second known incident after a dog died in Oshawa in 2023.

Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy stated that Animal Services is actively monitoring the situation and collaborating with the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative.

“The risk of transmission remains very low (but) as a general precaution, residents are encouraged to avoid contact with sick or injured wildlife, avoid contact with bird droppings, and keep pets leashed and away from wildlife.”

If you see a sick or dead bird, please report it to Whitby Animal Services at (905) 655-0283 and provide the location so staff can follow up.

For information on transmission and signs of avian flu in birds, visit the Region of Durham’s website at https://www. durham. ca/…/health-and…/avian-influenza. aspx.
