A beam ceremony recently took place at Gillam’s Mathematics 4 site on the University of Waterloo campus, celebrating the completion of the building’s structural frame, an important step forward for the project.

The event was a chance to acknowledge the hard work of all project partners, including the University of Waterloo, Moriyama Teshima Architects, Blackwell Structural Engineers, and various trades and consultants who played key roles in reaching this milestone. To mark the occasion, important stakeholders were invited to sign the beam before it was lifted into position.

Gillam is managing construction for the new five-storey building that spans 142,000 square feet in the center of the “Mathematics district” on campus in Waterloo, Ontario.

When finished, this building, designed by Moriyama Teshima Architects, will create a smooth connection between the existing Math & Computer Building and Davis Centre. The design follows principles that honor Indigenous perspectives while emphasizing innovation, outreach, collaboration, sustainability, connectivity, and green spaces.

The new facility will feature classrooms; research laboratories; an advanced eco-friendly server room known as the Green Room; spacious atriums with wide staircases; study halls for students; multiple lounge areas; additional office space; and meeting rooms. The current outdoor courtyard will also be preserved.

From a logistical standpoint, constructing this new building poses unique challenges as it overlaps parts of the active Davis Centre. Additionally, some sections of this facility will remain operational throughout different stages of construction. The scope also includes selective demolition within connected buildings and partially removing an existing walkway bridge that links Davis Centre to Math 3 building.

Sustainable features planned for this new structure include reusing portions of the existing Davis Centre office wing; Natural Ventilation Chimney Exhaust Louvre; Passive Cooling Design; Waterless Plumbing Fixtures; Heat Recovery Chiller; Energy Recovery Ventilator; Metering; Co2 Sensors; and PV Panels.

Gillam will keep collaborating with our project partners to ensure successful completion expected in summer 2027.
