Reyes L. Nabarrete OBITUARY

REYES L. NABARRETE Reyes passed away on March 13, 2019 at the age of 96, surrounded by her family at the Pomona Valley Medical Center. She was born on February 23, 1923 in Chino, California, as the sixth of eight children to Epifanio and Maria de los Angeles Lopez. Reyes attended D Street elementary school in Chino during a time when it was segregated. As a child, her mother would sometimes make her clothes from flour sacks, and she loved dancing with her father at community celebrations. During World War II, Reyes worked as a “Rosey Riveter,” contributing by working inside PBY aircraft wings due to her petite size. She and her fiancé, John, enjoyed going to shows featuring big bands and dancing to both Mexican and American music. They tied the knot on December 25, 1944 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pomona. Reyes created a warm and loving home for her children. An amazing cook, she prepared delicious meals for family gatherings and worked for several years in the cafeterias of Fremont and Simons Junior High schools. In recognition of her extensive work at Madison Elementary School, she was awarded a lifetime PTA membership. She also took part in many activities involving her children, including serving as a den mother for Cub Scouts. Traveling with her grandchildren brought her joy; she even made quilts for each one of them. The grandchildren especially loved her Mickey Mouse pancakes. Once their children were grown up, Reyes and John explored various places across the United States as well as international destinations like Europe, China, Tahiti, Hawaii, Fiji, Egypt, Mexico, Canada, the Holy Land, South America and many others. Her husband John passed away before her. She is survived by her brother Bobby who lives in Victorville along with her children Charles and Gudelia from West Covina; Gary who is a widower from Ontario; John and Kathy from Milbridge Maine; Diane Elias and Cedric from La Verne; ten grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. A public viewing will be held on Friday March 22 starting at 5 pm followed by a rosary at 6:30 pm at Todd Memorial Chapel. A funeral mass will take place on Saturday March 23 at Sacred Heart Church at 10 am with interment afterward at Holy Cross Cemetery in Pomona.
