The University of Guelph has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the second largest university co-op program in Ontario and the fifth largest across Canada.

For over 40 years, the University has been providing top-notch co-operative education, allowing students to gain relevant work experience, explore career options, and build professional connections while they earn their degrees.

Between 2019 and 2023, U of G nearly doubled its co-op offerings from 35 programs to 65, showcasing its dedication to experiential learning.

“This is a significant accomplishment at any time, but especially during today’s challenging economic and labour market conditions,” says Elaine Fenner, director of Experiential Learning. “I am so proud of the work of our co-operative education team.”

In the academic year 2024-2025, U of G students completed 3,569 paid co-op work terms across three semesters, which helped elevate the University into second place.

Co-op opportunities at U of G extend throughout Ontario and beyond

Students have taken on co-op work terms in Guelph, Southern Ontario, across Canada, and around the world. Recently, U of G-Humber introduced a co-op option for Business Administration students.

“Gaining work experience in their field of study is such an important component of students’ career development,” says Fenner. “Students build their skills, knowledge, abilities and networks while on a co-op work term. Our focus is to provide more students the opportunity to further their career development through co-op and work-integrated learning.”

The University’s Experiential Learning team has increased staffing capacity during its growth phase while continuing to offer outstanding personal support for students throughout their co-op journeys. The employment services team has also expanded to assist employers with everything from job postings to performance evaluations to regular check-ins during work terms.

After finishing an introductory course covering resume writing, cover letters, job searching techniques, and interview skills, students can start work terms that last anywhere from four to twelve months. Depending on their academic programs, they complete three to five paid work terms.

They find placements in private companies, public sectors or non-profits across various settings-from laboratories and production floors to offices or outdoor environments. Throughout their experiences, they receive guidance from staff who conduct regular check-ins with them.

U of G’s co-op program holds accreditation from Co-operative Education and Work Integrated Learning Canada (CEWIL) and meets standards established by the CEWIL accreditation council.

Visit the Co-operative Education website for more details about available opportunities.
