Sergeant Brandon Malcolm passed away while on duty Monday in Cobourg.

Police services throughout Ontario are joining the OPP in mourning the loss of an officer who died while serving along Highway 401 in Cobourg.

OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique confirmed that Sergeant Brandon Malcolm passed away while on duty Monday, describing his death as a significant loss for both the force and the province. Carrique mentioned that Malcolm’s dedication and courage will be honored as his colleagues mourn alongside his family.

Details regarding the events surrounding the incident have not been fully disclosed, and an investigation is ongoing. Earlier that day, the OPP had confirmed that an officer had died in the line of duty but chose to keep the identity private until family notifications were made.

The police haven’t shared how exactly the incident occurred along the busy highway corridor.

As news of Malcolm’s passing spreads, tributes are anticipated from various police services and officials across Ontario.

This loss is a heartbreaking moment for the OPP, with the commissioner urging everyone to keep the officer’s family, friends, and fellow officers in their thoughts during what he described as a profound loss.
