A mayor who has led an Ontario town for 20 years might not seek re-election this fall.

Rob Burton, who was first elected as mayor of Oakville in 2006, has openly shared that he’s thinking about retirement.

Recently, Burton has brought up his future at a few public events and also posted about it on Facebook.

“I have not decided if I’m going to run again in the upcoming municipal election. I’m going to take some time to consider alternatives and options to determine what’s best for the town, my family, and myself,” he said.

Candidates have until Aug. 21 to register for the municipal elections set for Oct. 26.

Burton will turn 80 years old in 2026.

The mayor mentioned that if he chooses not to run again, he plans to stay engaged with the community through his residents’ association.

Before entering public service, Burton worked as a businessman and had roles as a director and producer in journalism, film, and television by founding the YTV network. He earned a Master of Science degree from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism.
