A store employee in Guelph who attempted to stop two shoplifters from escaping with stolen items was repeatedly punched in the face and had her hair pulled out before the duo rode away on bicycles, according to police.

This violent event took place last Friday around 7 p. m. when a worker at a business on Stone Road West noticed two women “removing tags from products and placing them in their bags,” as reported by Guelph Police.

The employee followed the suspects outside and confronted them about the stolen items.

At that moment, one of the thieves “struck the employee several times in the face and pulled out a clump of hair,” police stated in a news release on Monday. “The employee’s glasses fell off during the altercation and were smashed” by the second thief.

A customer tried to assist the employee but was also attacked, police added.

Neither victim required medical treatment, according to law enforcement officials.

Investigators are currently searching for both suspects who fled on bicycles after committing theft and assault.

The first suspect is described as a white female with short dark hair. At the time of the incident, she wore a grey hoodie, black winter jacket, grey track pants, black-and-white shoes, and a baseball cap. She carried a black Nike backpack.

The second suspect is described as a white female with long purple hair. She wore a blue coat, black pants, and also had a backpack.

If you have any information regarding this incident, please call police at 519-824-1212, ext. 7553 or email [email protected]. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
