This year, a number of streets are set to be repaved.

During Monday’s meeting, the city council approved a $3.25 million contract with Ontario Limited (Sev Con Paving). You can find the complete list of asphalt resurfacing projects in the council agenda.

The streets listed do not include any major road rehabilitation projects that were approved earlier.

Council members instructed staff to negotiate changes to the financial accountability agreement with Tourism Sarnia Lambton (TSL) concerning the Municipal Accommodation Tax.

The city made this agreement with TSL in 2022, which is retroactive to 2020.

“I would like to, maybe, urge TSL to see this as a reset, to see this one-year renewal as not a negative but a positive,” said Councillor Anne Marie Gillis.

Adam Veen, TSL Interim Executive Director, had submitted a request to speak at the meeting but was not present.

City staff have been directed to seek external legal and planning assistance to uphold the Committee of Adjustment’s decision against Indwell’s proposed project on George Street at the Ontario Land Tribunal (OLT).

The motion supporting the Committee of Adjustment received backing from Councillors George Vandenberg, Anne Marie Gillis, Terry Burrell, Bill Dennis, and Dave Boushy.

A case management conference with the OLT is set for May 6.

The city anticipates finishing 2025 with an overall deficit estimated at $5.55 million.

The initial year-end results were presented prior to the year-end audit.

Sarnia has received $50,000 from the Community Emergency Preparedness Grant program towards purchasing a tethered drone.

“I think it’s something that’s going to be very, very useful going forward, especially considering the size of the city,” said Councillor Anne Marie Gillis.

The total expense is around $121,645. City staff suggested covering the remaining $71,645 through funds saved on completed capital projects from the infrastructure reserve.

The next regular council meeting is set for May 25; however, there will also be a special council meeting on May 11 for public input regarding the comprehensive zoning bylaw.

This meeting will take place at 1 p. m. in city hall. Mayor Mike Bradley stated that while it’s an opportunity for discussion, it’s not intended for taking motions from council members but rather listening to all speakers.
