Five individuals, including one child, were hospitalized after a fire broke out in Richmond Hill early Monday morning and are now in critical condition, according to fire officials.
York Regional Police reported that they received a call shortly after 3 a. m. regarding a residence near Skywood Drive and Rollinghill Road.
Paramedics indicated that they evaluated all five victims, four of whom were found without vital signs.
Four people were rescued from inside the house while one person managed to escape on their own, as stated by Jim Kettles from the Office of the Fire Marshal.
Police are investigating the incident alongside fire officials due to suspicious items being discovered at a nearby school, Kettles mentioned.
“We’re going to devote every resource that we need to hopefully uncover what it was that happened here,” he told reporters at the scene.
A gas can and a backpack were located at Saint Marguerite d’Youville Catholic School, which left many local residents like Clair Tang feeling shocked.
“I can’t believe that somebody can do this to our neighbors,” she said.
As of now, police have not made any arrests related to the fire.
