Ontario Premier Doug Ford has praised a homeowner who shot an intruder in Vaughan, suggesting he could have “shot him a couple more times.”

Just before 1 a. m. on Tuesday, York Regional Police responded to reports of a shooting at a residence near Carville Woods Circle and Crimson Forest Drive.

According to officers, an armed suspect broke into the home, where the legal gun owner fired at them. The suspect fled but was later located in the hospital.

“Congratulations, I’m glad you shot the guy, teaches the rest of these robbers,” Ford stated during an unrelated news conference on Wednesday. “These guys, they need to be shot, as far as I’m concerned.”

The premier has expressed concern about his belief that crime is increasing in Ontario, noting that it wasn’t like this ten years ago.

“We’ve all lived here our whole lives; did we ever see this 10 years ago? Fifteen years ago? No, we’ve never seen this,” he mentioned in Brockville, Ont., on Monday. “We started noticing it five years ago; it’s running rampant across Ontario and we’re going to put an end to it.”

Ford first took office as premier in June 2018-almost eight years ago. In Toronto, however, almost every major crime statistic-including homicide, assault, and break-ins-was down last year.

During his press conference on Wednesday, Ford continued to commend the homeowner.

“They need to rot in jail for the rest of their lives. Congratulations for shooting this guy. Should have shot him a couple more times as far as I’m concerned,” he said.

Later on, he added, “What I’m saying is what most people are thinking in the province; I can assure you.”
