Police say they were looking for attention, but now face court dates.
Durham Regional Police claim that three young men who sparked a gun scare at a Whitby movie theatre were just trying to pull a prank for social media fame.
Officers responded to Landmark Cinemas at 75 Consumers Drive on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, around 11:20 p. m.
“Customers were forced to leave a movie theatre after several males yelled that someone was in possession of a firearm,” a police release explained. “Officers arrived on scene and were directed toward three males who had left the theatre.”
After looking into the situation, police say they found out the suspects were making social media content and “had intentionally created a false disturbance to generate a reaction they could film.”
Their attempt at gaining attention did succeed in attracting investigators’ focus, leading to the arrest of three males from Ajax.
Fique Wamiq Ayub, 23, Jaiden Joseph-Anthony Mosquera, 23, and a 17-year-old whose name can’t be revealed because he’s a minor all face charges of causing disturbance and mischief.
They have been released on undertakings.
