ANC Modular Inc. is set to create prefabricated pedestrian bridges, platform access buildings, and other parts for the renovation of Oakville GO Station. This project aims to boost capacity and enhance accessibility at this busy transit location.

The Brantford-based company is collaborating with the Kenaidan Murphy Joint Venture, which is managing construction for the Metrolinx project. Together, they will construct four buildings along with pedestrian bridges, elevator shafts, platform access stairs, and canopies using volumetric modular construction.

All components will be made at ANC’s 180,000-sq. ft. factory in Brantford. Here, modules will be assembled, finished, and inspected before being sent to the station for installation during scheduled service interruptions.

This renovation of Oakville GO Station is part of Metrolinx’s broader plan to enhance GO Transit service by getting the station ready for trains every 15 minutes during peak times.

Construction has already begun on-site. This includes rebuilding platforms with features for future electrification as well as creating accessible pedestrian bridges equipped with four elevators and four staircases. The updates also involve installing new mini-platforms, canopies, shelters, a larger bus loop, and improvements to the station building itself.

ANC is working closely with Kenaidan Murphy and R. V. Anderson Associates Ltd., a design consultancy based in Toronto. They are modifying architectural plans to fit into their volumetric modular system while preserving the original design intent.

Each module will be a steel-framed unit produced in ANC’s CSA A277-certified factory and welded in its Canadian Welding Bureau-certified shop. Workers and subcontractors will complete as many interior and exterior finishes as possible before these modules leave the factory.

This method allows manufacturing to take place alongside on-site construction at the station, minimizing on-site work needed and reducing disruptions for passengers.

ANC noted that producing these components in a factory also helps keep the construction schedule safe from weather delays while providing better control over quality and energy performance. Module installations will be synchronized with platform construction phases to lessen work duration near active railway tracks.

Opened in 1967 when GO Transit started operations, Oakville GO Station is currently the busiest station along the Lakeshore West line with over 10,270 daily users.

The use of modular construction aims to lower risks associated with on-site work for both workers and the public while limiting inconvenience for transit users at the station.

ANC mentioned that this project would support Ontario’s manufacturing sector as well as skilled tradespeople. Their in-house design team manages modularization while local skilled trades-like certified welders-and Ontario suppliers will handle fabrication in Brantford.

The company confirmed that about 80 to 85 percent of steel framing used in these modules would be sourced from Canada; international materials would only be utilized if equivalent products aren’t available locally.

“The Oakville GO Station Renovation is exactly the kind of project that ANC was built for,” said Andrew Neill, founder, president and CEO of ANC.

“Volumetric steel modular construction has an important role to play as our communities continue to invest in upgrades to our infrastructure, transit systems and more,” Neill said. “Oakville GO is a busy site where every hour of on-site work matters.”

He added that prefabricating buildings like bridges or stairwells would allow Metrolinx and Kenaidan Murphy to finish their work more safely while minimizing disruption for those using transit services.

“Bringing this approach to a station on the Lakeshore corridor means a great deal to all of us at ANC,” Neill said.

Founded in 2017, ANC operates out of Brantford where it manufactures modular building elements aimed at industrial, commercial, and institutional sectors.
