People in parts of the Greater Toronto Area are waking up to chilly temperatures this morning, with some regions likely hitting the freezing point.
A frost warning is currently active for Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton and nearby areas as temperatures dip sharply early today.
The coldest weather is expected north of Highway 401, where temperatures may drop to around 0 C.
Locations nearer to Lake Ontario should stay a bit warmer, with temperatures predicted to remain a few degrees above freezing thanks to the lake’s moderating effect.
This sudden drop in temperature could harm plants, trees and crops that aren’t tolerant of freezing conditions.
Residents with gardens or outdoor plants are being urged to take steps to shield anything susceptible to the cold.
Plants that are sensitive to cold can be covered or moved indoors if possible, while gardeners should take precautions against potential frost damage to their crops.
Frost can form when surface temperatures fall below freezing, even if the air temperature stays slightly above 0 C.

The warning comes as southern Ontario moves further into fall and overnight and early-morning temperatures grow increasingly colder.
Temperatures are expected to rise after sunrise, ending the immediate frost threat later this morning.
Residents should keep an eye on local forecasts as colder overnight conditions become more frequent across Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area as October progresses.
