Durham police report that a 6-year-old girl who went missing in Whitby has been located.
The last sighting of her was at a Mc Donald’s near Dundas Street East and Thickson Road on Saturday.
She was with her dad but ended up being left with one of his friends.
On Sunday, she was seen with that man in Peel.
The police state that the father wasn’t cooperating with their investigation and they couldn’t reach the girl’s mother.
The girl’s grandfather is the one who reported her missing.
This situation has raised questions about why an Amber Alert wasn’t issued when she was first reported missing.
The circumstances of the girl’s disappearance didn’t meet the criteria for an alert.
According to DRPS
An AMBER Alert is a provincial emergency announcement designed to quickly inform the public about a suspected child abduction. If an event meets specific criteria, DRPS will ask the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) to issue the AMBER Alert.
Please note: not every instance of a missing child warrants an AMBER Alert.
To keep alerts effective, they must fulfill these criteria to be issued:
– police have confirmed that an abduction has taken place; and
– the victim is a child, or someone with verified physical or mental disabilities; and
– there are concerns that the victim may face serious physical harm; and
– there is available information that could help in safely recovering the victim if shared publicly.
