New Initiatives for Mobility Innovators in Durham

As these initiatives progress, fresh opportunities are popping up to change how people and goods move around the region. Ontario Tech University is enhancing its role in this changing mobility scene through a new collaboration led by the City of Oshawa to manage the Durham Region Innovation and Vehicle Ecosystem (DRIVE). Other collaborators include 1855 Whitby Accelerator, the Region of Durham, and the Town of Whitby. DRIVE serves as Durham Region’s center within the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN), aiding companies in creating, testing and commercializing next-generation mobility technologies by offering access to research expertise, specialized facilities and business support. “DRIVE represents the best of what can happen when universities, municipalities and industry come together with a shared purpose,” says Dr. Les Jacobs, Vice-President, Research and Innovation at Ontario Tech University. “Ontario Tech is opening doors to advanced testing environments and specialized expertise that many smaller companies cannot normally access. This helps create conditions innovators need to push forward transportation technologies.” “The City of Oshawa and Durham Region are leading Canada’s mobility transformation,” says Dan Carter, Mayor of the City of Oshawa. “OVIN’s backing for DRIVE shows strong support for our region's strengths. By bringing together industry experts, academia and government agencies, DRIVE is helping entrepreneurs speed up innovation in electric mobility technology smart solutions as well as advanced manufacturing.”Fostering Mobility Innovation In the next four years, DRIVE will provide business development along with testing chances for over 60 small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) focused on mobility/transportation based in Ontario. “As a global leader in automotive tech,” says Raed Kadri from OVIN “Ontario is steering us toward a connected electric future. The OVIN Regional Technology Sites grant Ontario-based SMEs access to an extensive support network which helps lower barriers for startups trying to develop local solutions.” As an essential partner in DRIVE efforts , Ontario Tech will offer research expertise along with technical capabilities while providing access to its top-tier facilities. Participating businesses will work out of the Innovation Garage located within the university's ACE facility. They’ll get discounted use of ACE's highly advanced research tools allowing them to test their mobility tech under controlled conditions mirroring real-world situations. The university will also oversee DRIVE's daily operations while delivering core programs aimed at speeding up innovation while boosting collaboration among industry players researchers as well as government partners. Startups along with SMEs can take advantage of resources such as Mobility Accelerator Brilliant Incubator , and investment opportunities available through Brilliant Catalyst which serves as Ontario Tech’s hub for entrepreneurship innovation.Linking Innovators with Expertise Through DRIVE , participating firms will gain insights from both researchers at Ontario Tech plus key figures from various industries.
