Two teenagers from Guelph are facing second degree murder charges following the death of a 16-year-old pedestrian who was hit by a minivan.
Early on Saturday, Sept. 19, just after midnight, the young teen from Puslinch was tragically struck by the van on Wellington Road 29, south of Eramosa-Garafraxa Town Line, near Fergus.
According to police, the driver of the minivan remained at the scene after the accident.
In the days after this unfortunate event, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) informed City News Kitchener that they were aware of information about the crash circulating online and cautioned against sharing unverified details.
“We are asking members of the public to refrain from sharing or posting any unverified information, photos or videos related to this case,” said OPP spokesperson Constable Matthew Burton.
“We recognize that this incident has deeply affected the community and that many people may be sharing information in an effort to help or support the investigation. However, sharing unconfirmed information can compromise the integrity of the investigation, influence witness accounts and hinder efforts to identify and hold those responsible accountable.”
The following day, two 17-year-old boys were charged with second degree murder. Their identities cannot be disclosed due to the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
The OPP stated that they are still investigating what caused the crash. The OPP Criminal Investigation Branch and OPP Forensic Identification Services are involved along with the Office of the Chief Coroner and Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.
