A new and improved scoreboard has made its debut at Sam Lamb Field in Tillsonburg.
This fresh scoreboard, brought to life by Baseball Tillsonburg, was finally set up in early July.
“This one has new technologies,” Scott Vitias, president of Tillsonburg Minor Baseball, stated. “The old one had some defective bulbs and stuff, so it had served its purpose, but it was time.”
Baseball Tillsonburg – established in 2004 – has been involved with various local initiatives over the years.
The group contributed to the irrigation system, a scoreboard, and safety screens back in 2006. They also made a donation to the Tri-County Agricultural Society in 2009. In 2010, they helped cover costs for a food tent for spectators, followed by a Relay for Life contribution in 2012 and diamond improvements in 2013. Club volunteers even assisted with donations to National Service Dogs in 2017 and the JL Scott Mc Lean outdoor recreation pad in 2018.
The two-diamond ball park got its name from the local figure who turned 93 years old in 2011.
“(It’s) very, very important,” Lamb said about the new scoreboard. “It was a good dedication.”

Lamb was inducted into the Canadian National Oldtimers Baseball Federation’s Hall of Fame back in 2015.
Lamb’s ties to baseball in Tillsonburg go way back to at least 1939 when he played with the Pan Drieds on the diamond that used to be fronted by what is now a removed grandstand at Memorial Park.
<p Throughout history, teams from Tillsonburg have claimed four Ontario Baseball Association championships. The Old Sox even secured three national titles in 1999, 2004, and 2005; the last championship game took place right here in Tillsonburg.
The addition of a new diamond during the ’90s earned this park recognition as one of southern Ontario’s finest facilities.
The two diamonds are currently utilized by bantam and midget teams from Tillsonburg Minor Baseball and will later accommodate junior and senior teams as well.
